After placing nose tackle Ian Williams on Injured Reserve, the San Francisco 49ers signed fullback Owen Marecic. Williams broke his left ankle against the Seattle Seahawks and he had season ending surgery on Monday.
Jim Harbaugh coached Marecic at Stanford from 2007-2010. Marecic has been described as one of Harbaugh’s favorite players. The fullback was released by the Cleveland Browns on August 27 and he had a tryout with the 49ers, but he was not signed. He will backup starting fullback Bruce Miller and can play on special teams.
Marecic was inactive for six games last season with the Browns and he was on the field for only one offensive play. He was drafted by Cleveland in the fourth-round in 2011 and has five receptions for 31 yards, and four carries for eight yards in his career.
Williams was placed on injured reserve after he had surgery. Glen Dorsey, who had a sack in Week 2, will likely be the starter at nose tackle against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. He is second on the depth chart, but the Niners have no choice to go with him because he is the only nose tackle left on the roster. The 49ers other three healthy defensive linemen on the roster are Justin Smith, Demarcus Dobbs and Tony Jerod-Eddie.
The only positive I can find in signing Marecic is that he has played for Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman for four years. But the need for the Niners was not at fullback. Despite how Miller played in Week 2, he is a solid fullback and should remain the starter. So why bring in another fullback, when you are down a player at nose tackle?
