The San Francisco 49ers did it again, sticking one to the Seattle Seahawks, in signing fourth round rookie receiver Chris Harper. Harper may not have shown much promise this preseason, but at 6’1” and 229 pounds, he could easily line up at tight end as well as wide receiver. The early word is that this is the coaching staff’s plan.
Why in the world would the 49ers pick up a player that had a pretty miserable preseason? Well, his measurable are fantastic, meaning that there are good signs he can develop into a solid receiver. Furthermore, he is almost exactly the same size as Anquan Boldin, meaning he will have the best possible education for a year. The 49ers’ injury concerns at the position also factor in, as does losing Delanie Walker. Finally, Harper was a Seahawk. 49er fans have noticed that two former quarterbacks have landed on the Green Bay Packers. Teams like to glean information from former players of opposing teams. It goes a step further on the West Coast, however. The Seahawks reportedly fought like crazy to keep Harper from the Crimson and Gold. Somehow, someway, these teams keep striving to annoy the heck out of each other. I, personally, am loving every minute of it. Go 49ers.
