If you were wondering why quarterback Seneca Wallace did not travel with the team for yesterday’s 41-6 win over the San Diego Chargers, it’s because he retired from the NFL.
It was announced before the game that Wallace did not travel with the team, but it was not known until afterwards that he had retired. Speaking with reports after the final preseason game yesterday, head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed that Wallace had retired and that he was surprised by the move.
I wouldn’t share the conversation, but it was something that was his decision. He felt strongly about it, and I don’t talk people out of that. Never seen it (happen) on game day, but wish him well. Gave Colt and B.J. more snaps tonight.
Wallace only appeared in the third preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings and he completed 2-of-2 passes for 27 yards. He was a long shot to make the team with three quarterbacks ahead of him on the depth chart. Plus, he had only been with the team since August 22 after he signed a one-year deal. The Niners likely signed him in case either Colt McCoy or B.J. Daniels suffered any injuries in the final two preseason games.
