The final 2013 preseason game for the San Francisco 49ers will be against the San Diego Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium. Normally the fourth preseason game is a snoozer, however, with so many Niner players on the roster bubble expect tonight’s contest to have excitement.
Players like receivers Austin Collie and Lavelle Hawkins will want to make big impressions on Jim Harbaugh and his coaching staff not only to make the roster, but to get higher-up on the depth chart. Marlon Moore looks to be the frontrunner in winning the No. 2 receiver spot for the Niners. If Moore can continue to play like he has in the last three preseason games, he will be starting opposite Anquan Boldin in Week 1.
Other than the No. 2 spot at wide receiver, all of the other starting jobs on offense and defense are set for the regular season. What will be interesting to watch is who fills out the backup jobs. Nnamdi Asomugha and Tramaine Brock are battling it out for the No. 3 cornerback position. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Asomugha has the edge heading into the game.
Another position battle for a No. 3 spot, but at quarterback, is between Seneca Wallace and B.J. Daniels. Quarterback Colt McCoy has been named the backup behind Colin Kaepernick for the regular season. Kaepernick will play one series, if that tonight.
So who comes in after McCoy is done for the game could be indication of who has the upper hand to be the No. 3 QB on the depth chart. My money is on Daniels coming in after McCoy and to also win the third-string quarterback job. Wallace brings experience to the position, but Daniels has more upside.
In the last two seasons Harbaugh has never kept more than three quarterbacks on the regular season roster. If you recall, last preseason many thought he would go with four QB’s as he had Kaepernick, Alex Smith, Scott Tolzien and Josh Johnson. All four played well and even though Johnson was ultimately cut, he was expected to join the practice squad. The reason being was because Harbaugh had coached Johnson while the two were at the University of San Diego. The Niners did not sign him to the practice squad. So expect only three QB’s on the regular season roster again for this season, with Wallace getting the axe.
