The San Francisco 49ers have had a busy day with roster transactions on Thursday. Earlier today the 49ers signed QB Seneca Wallace while releasing WR Ricardo Lockette and now they have placed injured backup safety Darcel McBath on injured reserve ending his season and signing inside linebacker Joe Holland.
Darcel McBath was in a battle for a roster spot after he was used primarily as a backup safety and on special teams in the 49ers run to the Super Bowl last year. McBath’s injury leaves the position battle at safety still in question with Trenton Robinson, C.J. Spillman and Craig Dahl fighting for a roster spot and playing time.
Holland had a stint with the 49ers last year after signing as an undrafted free agent from Purdue. Holland was most recently with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He will have an uphill battle to make the team with only two preseason games left and ILB Michael Wilhoite, Nate Stupar and sixth-round pick Nick Moody all playing well.
The 49ers have already placed WR Brandon Carswell, FB Alex Debniak and LB Darius Fleming on injured reserve. Defensive back Chris Culliver will be placed on IR in the coming weeks once the roster cuts have taken place.
