San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh announced today that wide receiver Mario Manningham will start the regular season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and will miss at least the first six games of the season.
Manningham is still recovering from a torn ACL that ended his season last year.
When placed on the PUP list the player is ineligible to come off the list until at least week six and the player does not count against the teams 53-man roster.
Many were hoping that Manningham would be activated soon and would be immediately in the competition for the #2 receiver on the team. The Niners have been searching for a #2 receiver since Michael Crabtree ruptured his Achilles tendon.
The 49ers have a lot of depth at the receiver position and they will not rush Manningham back, but the Niners are expecting both Manningham and Crabtree to be added to the receiving corps later in the year to hopefully bolster their regular season and playoff run.
