Three weeks after signing with the San Francisco 49ers, wide receiver Charly Martin was cut today by the team. To fill his roster spot the 49ers re-signed punter Colton Schmidt.
When the 49ers claimed Martin off waivers back in July, it was thought he would not only compete for a roster spot at wide receiver, but he would also give insight into the Seattle Seahawks’ offense. He was with the Seahawks last season, appearing in four games. Let’s hope the coaches picked Martin’s brain on the Seahawks’ offense before they released him. The 49ers now have 11 receivers on their roster, including injured wide outs Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham.
Hopefully Martin can catch on with another team before the start of the season.
San Francisco signed Schmidt to a contract for the second-time in less than a month. He was originally signed on July 15, to a three-year contract. Just last week, on August 2, he was released to make room for free agent wide receivers Austin Collie and Lavelle Hawkins. Now he finds himself back with the team.
You might be wondering why the 49ers need another punter on the roster. No, Pro Bowl punter Andy Lee is not hurt or struggling at training camp. But the move was made to give Lee’s legs some rest during the training camp, so he can be fresh for the regular season.
