San Francisco 49ers star inside linebacker Patrick Willis had “minor” surgery on his broken hand, according to multiple reports.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen said it was a “minor surgery” that happened a few days ago and that he should be ready for the season opener at home versus the Green Bay Packers.
Willis broke his hand in Training Camp and was never going to play in the preseason after breaking it in pass-rushing drills against fullback Bruce Miller.
With all the injuries happening to the Niners and around the league, it’s never good to have one of your best players have surgery, but the Niners have to feel lucky that it was only a minor surgery and he won’t miss a lot of time.
Fellow inside linebacker Navorro Bowman has been nicked up in practice too, logic says that he won’t play that much in the preseason as well. Michael Wilhoite, Nate Stupar and rookie sixth-round linebacker Nick Moody are all competing to for the backup inside linebacker positions.
Willis is obviously a very big part of the 49ers defense as he and Bowman control the middle of the field and he covers the teams best tight end on most plays.
