While covering a punt, Culliver injured his left knee and was carted off the field in “tears”. Obviously, we don’t know the extent of the injury, but a Football player leaving the field via cart and in tears is pretty worrisome for a team that is trying to figure out their restructured defensive backfield.
Culliver has been a nickel back for the 49ers and at times was the best cover corner on the team. Being the third corner, he would be on the field a lot since many teams utilize three or more receivers in the evolving passing league.
Culliver had a rough week leading up to the Super Bowl and did not play well in the loss to the Baltimore Ravens, but he has been an integral part of this defense and was competing to be the starting corner opposite of Tarell Brown.
Earlier today it was announced that Patrick Willis had a fractured hand and the 49ers have already lost Michael Crabtree and Darius Fleming to serious injuries.
Niner Noise will have more information when it is released.
