The San Francisco 49ers trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for defensive back Eric Wright is a no-go. The 49ers team doctors failed Wright on his physical and his rights have reverted back to the Bucs.
Last week, Wright was traded to the 49ers for a conditional late-round pick, but with the failed physical the 49ers will not consummate the trade. Reports are that Wright will now be released by Tampa Bay and he will be an unrestricted free agent.
Wright signed a five-year deal with Tampa Bay last year, but a failed drug test for performing enhancing drugs voided all his guaranteed money and he signed a one-year deal with the Bucs.
The reason for Wright’s failed physical has not been released yet.
The 49ers still return their top five corners from last year and added Nnamdi Asomugha to the competition.
The question now will be whether the 49ers look into the trade market for another defensive back to bolster their depth or stick with the current roster and let the competition decide who starts and makes the 53-man roster.
The 49ers veterans report to Training Camp this Wednesday, after the rookies reported on the 19th. We will see how the competition plays out.
