Niner Noise presents the final selection in our 5 Most Underrated San Francisco 49ers on the current roster. Our most underrated player on the roster is outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks.
Like a lot of the 49ers, Brooks gets overshadowed by the immense talent around him. With bigger names like Aldon Smith, Justin Smith, Patrick Willis and Navorro Bowman on the front seven, Brooks flies under-the-radar but he is still a big time playmaker for the Niner Defense.
Brooks made arguably the biggest defensive play of the year against the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game. Everyone remembers the fourth down play where Bowman broke up a pass intended for Roddy White, but the Niners would never have forced a fourth down if it wasn’t for Brooks making a game saving pass breakup on third down on the drive that would ultimately send the Niners to the Super Bowl.
Although his statistics don’t show how good of a pass rusher he was this past season, he recorded 6.5 sacks and had a pick-six against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints.
Brooks is not without off-the-field incidents. He had to enter the Supplemental Draft in 2006, where he was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals. The Niners later picked him up off waivers and converted him from inside linebacker to pass rushing outside linebacker in the 49ers 3-4 defense. Just yesterday, Brooks was not charged with assault of him teammate, Lamar Divens, after allegedly breaking a Heineken bottle over his head after a dispute over drunk driving. The league is investigating the matter and may suspend Brooks for a game or two.
Niner Nation, what do you think of the Niner Noise’s 5 most underrated 49ers on the current roster? Did we forget anyone? Is someone underrated actually overrated or rated just enough? Let us know in the comments!
