Niner Noise presents the penultimate selection in our 5 Most Underrated San Francisco 49ers on the current roster. Our second most underrated player on the roster is defensive back Tarell Brown.
Brown is arguably the best corner on the roster, ahead of such names as: Carlos Rogers, Nnamdi Asomugha and Chris Culliver. Yet, he is often unheralded as such.
In the playoffs, Brown really stepped his game up. Intercepting a pass from one of the best QBs in the NFL, Green Bay Packers‘ Aaron Rodgers and forcing a fumble against Ray Rice and the Baltimore Ravens that lead to a score and an almost historic comeback in the Super Bowl.
Brown, selected in the fifth-round of the 2007 NFL Draft, fell down teams’ draft boards despite having immense talent. Off the field concerns at the University of Texas ultimately lead to his NFL stock drop in the Draft, but former Niners General Manager Scott McCloughan identified him as a second-round talent and got a steal in the fifth-round. Brown is in a contract year this year and if he continues his high level of play, the 49ers will have a big decision to make – whether to franchise tag him, sign him to a long term contract or let him test free agency.
Brown and the 49ers secondary will have their hands full this year, they open up the season at home against the Packers and then head to the toughest place to play in the NFL, Seattle, in what could be a game that decides the champions of the NFC West.
Tomorrow will be our final installment of the 5 Most Underrated 49ers, check out who is the most underrated Niner player.
