On Tuesday night, San Francisco 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman appeared on the NFL Network’s Total Access show. Bowman was on the show to discuss the upcoming season for the Niners, but he also shared his thoughts on Colin Kaepernick wearing a Miami Dolphins at a Fourth of July party.
With a smile on his face Bowman said,
This is a huge mistake by Kaep. I’m sure he understands that now. In his defense, we’re young, in our era these days we like to match our snapbacks with our outfits. The hats now these days are very important to the outfit, so Kaep, I understand what you did, but let’s stay away from the NFL teams. Stick to NBA, go to college or the baseball hats.
Bowman’s advice for Kaepernick about wearing hats of teams from other leagues is also what Niner Noise said the young QB should do in the future. Cleary, Kaep had a lapse of judgment when deciding to wear another NFL team’s hat, all in the name of fashion.
To be fair, Kaep did post an Instagram photo three days after being seen in a Dolphins hat, saying: “It’s just swag it ain’t never hurt nobody!” He was wearing a 49ers cap and t-shirt. But I wonder what prompted him to post the picture three days after the fact? Was it the reaction from fans? Did it come down from the Niners front office or coaching staff?
However, not all Niner players think Kaepernick was wrong in wearing another NFL team’s hat. Aldon Smith gave an interview on ESPN’s First Take show on Wednesday. Smith said about Kaep’s cap,
He’s not in the game, he’s not throwing up Miami Dolphins signs. He plays for us, he plays hard for us.
He can wear a Chicago Bears shirt, it’s fine. As long as he’s dedicated to what he does and he does a great job on the field and he’s dedicated to his team and he’s a leader for us, that’s all that matters.
When Colin rushes for 1,500 yards, it doesn’t matter. He can wear the team that he ran the yards on. Let him have fun.
Fair enough, but I completely disagree with Smith. Does Smith or Kaepernick not care about being dedicated to the 49ers Faithful by not wearing another NFL team’s hat? Even though Smith is adamant about letting Kaep wear any hat he wants, whether it’s another NFL team or not, I doubt Smith would ever wear a Bears shirt or hat out in public.
When any player, whether a superstar or third-string backup, does something like this the reaction is the same from fans. It should not be done. The player needs to show dedication and heart to the Red and Gold and the 49ers Faithful by only wearing Niners gear. Make your fashion statement, but do it wisely. Otherwise you look like you are not dedicated to the Niners and you are only looking out for yourself.
