Safeties on the Roster: Darcel McBath, Eric Reid, Trenton Robinson, C.J. Spillman, Michael Thomas, Raymond Ventrone, Donte Whitner, Craig Dahl
Position Battle: Starting free safety
The Battling Players: Eric Reid, Craig Dahl
Despite being a 2012 Pro Bowler the San Francisco 49ers decided not to pay safety Dashon Goldson the top money he wanted. This created a big hole for the team to fill on defense at an important position in the secondary. The game plan for the Niners front office was to select the best safety available in the draft, even if that meant trading picks to move up. San Francisco landed safety Eric Reid with the 18th overall pick and he is widely expected to become the starter.
Before the team drafted Reid, they signed former St. Louis Rams safety Craig Dahl as a free agent. Even though Dahl is a five-year veteran with 42 career starts, he has an outside chance to win the starting job at free safety. Either way, Dahl has already been valuable to the 49ers as he helped correct the mistakes team made last season against the Rams.
Position Prediction: Reid will have to show rookie ineptness and play poorly at training camp for Dahl to be the starter. Minus that or an injury to Reid, he will be starting at free safety.
