After news first surfaced weeks ago that the San Francisco 49ers were interested in adding Eric Mangini to their coaching staff, today the team made it official with him being hired as a senior offensive consultant.
Reported weeks ago former Jets/Browns HC Eric Mangini was out in SF meeting about an offensive consultant job. He has accepted it

Mangini was working as an NFL analyst for ESPN since August 2011 and before that he was a head coach of the Cleveland Browns (2009-2010) and New York Jets (2006-2008). While he did not have much success as a head coach, he brings an enormous amount of defensive knowledge with his 14 years of coaching experience. He also served as an assistant for the Baltimore Ravens, Jets, and New England Patriots. He won three Super Bowls with the Patriots as their defensive backs coach.
It might seem odd the 49ers are hiring a primarily defensive coach as an offensive consultant. As senior offensive consultant, one of the things Mangini will help with is game planning for opposing defenses. So don’t expect Mangini to be working closely with offensive coordinator Greg Roman developing plays and giving advice on what plays to call.
Another reason for hiring Mangini is as insurance policy in case defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is hired away from the 49ers after the upcoming season. Both Fangio and Roman have received interest from other NFL teams and in the college ranks to become head coaches the past two off-seasons.
