All of the new players the San Francisco 49ers have acquired this offseason were assigned jersey numbers for the 2013 season.
The 49ers biggest offseason acquisition, wide receiver Anquan Boldin, will wear No. 81. Last season, tight end Garrett Celek wore No. 81, but for the upcoming season he will change to No. 88. There was no surprise with Boldin’s selection because he has worn No. 81 in each of his ten seasons in the NFL. I am sure there was some kind of reward or incentive Celek received for giving up his number.
The most famous Niner to wear No. 81 was Terrell Owens. He is the only receiver on the 49ers to have success wearing 81. Some other notable receivers who wore 81 were forgettable receivers Antonio Bryant, Braylon Edwards and Rashaun Woods. Let’s hope Boldin has success like Owens did when wearing the number in a Red and Gold uniform.
(You can buy Boldin’s No. 81 jersey here.)
Interestingly, new cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was not on the list because he has not selected his uniform number. Below is a list of the other new uniform numbers assigned, with notable Niners who have also worn the number.
Q B Colt McCoy – 2
McCoy wore No. 12 since his playing days at University of Texas and no current Niner is assigned that number. Looks like McCoy is looking for a fresh start not only with a new team, but also with a new number.
Punter Ralf Mojsiejenko wore No. 2 in his single season with San Francisco in 1991. He only attempted 16 punts that season, but he is on this list only because he has one of the best names in Niners franchise history.
K Phil Dawson – 9
Dawson wore No. 4 since 1999, his first season with the Cleveland Browns. However, fellow special teamer Andy Lee is the current owner of the jersey number on the 49ers roster. It might be a good thing not to mess with Lee by taking away his number.
Punter Barry Helton wore No. 9 during his two Super Bowl seasons with the 49ers in 1988 and ’89.
WR Marlon Moore – 19
From 1969-1977, wide receiver Gene Washington wore No. 19 and he had two seasons with 12 touchdowns for the 49ers. He was selected as an All-Pro in 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972 seasons.
DT Glenn Dorsey – 90
In his five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs Dorsey wore No. 72. The number is currently available, but Dorsey elected to go with No. 90.
Former 49ers nose tackle Isaac Sopoaga wore No. 90 from 2004-2012.
S Craig Dahl – 43
Defensive back and kickoff returner Dana McLemore wore No. 43 from 1982-1987. He was one of the best kickoff returners in the league while he was with the 49ers.
Running back Maurice Hicks also wore No. 43 from 2004-2007.
LB Dan Skuta – 51
G Wayne Tribue – 62
G Joe Looney – 78
TE Cameron Morrah – 89
