According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the San Francisco 49ers have scheduled a pre-draft visit with Georgia’s DT John Jenkins. The 6’4″ 348 pound behemoth nose tackle, will most likely be evaluated to take the place of departed NT Isaac Sopoaga. Jenkins is rated as the fifth best defensive tackle on my big board and second best nose tackle.
Jenkins known to be a “pusher” rather than a rusher, will consistently command double teams, freeing up the linebackers behind him to make open field tackles. A pure 3-4 nose tackle, Jenkins will almost exclusively be looked at by 3-4 defensive teams. A strong bull down in the trenches, Jenkins knocked out 30 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press at the NFL scouting combine. However, he is extremely slow and unable to disengage from blockers, allowing running backs to run right past him.
I have Jenkins graded as a second-round pick although many NFL Draft pundits have a first-round grade on him. The thing that Jenkins has is size. He would be a great assest in short yardage and goal-line packages but no where near a three-down lineman. His stamina is questionable and although he will see limited snaps, his play will greatly be determined by his ability to occupy blockers and disrupt blocking schemes.
