Kicker Phil Dawson signed on March 19, 2013 (1-year, $2.25 million)
HT: 5 ft 11 in WT: 200 lb
Former Team: Cleveland Browns
2012 Stats: 29 FGM of 31 FGA, 93.5 PCT, 53 yards LNG
When it comes to kickers, age is nothing but a number. At 38 years old, Dawson was the top kicker on the market, and after David Akers’ debacle last season, getting the best player available is the reason for an A+ grade. He hit on 29-of-31 field goals attempts in 2012 and made all seven of his kicks from 50-plus yards. Dawson will be a reliable kicker the 49ers missed for much of last season.
It was a surprise to see Dawson sign with another team as he spent the past 14 seasons in Cleveland. But it looks like he signed with the 49ers so he can play for a contender. Considering the other top kicker available in free agency, Rob Bironas, signed a 2-year, $6.6 million deal, getting the experienced and automatic Dawson for $2.25 million this season, is a steal. One worry is Dawson has not played in a playoff game since 2002.
