Defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey signed on March 13, 2013 (2 years, $6 million)
HT: 6 ft 1 in WT: 297 Ib
Former Team: Kansas City Chiefs
2012 Stats: 7 tackles (played in only four games)
Dorsey was signed to play nose tackle in the 49ers 3-4 base defense and will be taking over for Isaac Sopoaga on the defensive live. The problem with the Dorsey signing is he played at defensive end in Kansas City’s 3-4 base defense and did not excel. The former fifth-overall selection in 2008 is better suited in a 4-3 base defense and lining up at defensive end.
At nose tackle Dorsey is undersized and will be called upon to put pressure on the quarterback. While he is great at stopping the run, he is not an excellent pass rusher with only four sacks in five seasons. Another concern, and the reason for the C+ grade, is Dorsey was placed on injured reserve in Week 9 last season with a calf injury. Still, Dorsey is an upgrade over Sopoaga and if can stay healthy will be a force in stopping the run. Plus, the contract is only for two years, with $2.2 million counting against the salary cap in 2013.
