When the 2013 NFL Draft commences on April 25, the San Francisco 49ers could have as many as 14 selections. At the NFL owners meetings today in Phoenix, AZ, the 49ers front office added three compensatory draft picks to their 11 selections.
San Francisco received a compensatory pick in the fourth round (No. 131 overall) and two in the seventh round (No. 246/No. 252 overall). The number of picks the Niners were awarded equals the net loss of compensatory free agents. It is also based on a player’s salary, playing time and amount of postseason hours the Niners lost to free agency last off-season. One example is wide receiver Joshua Morgan signing with the Washington Redskins last off-season. The 49ers received a fourth round pick for this year’s draft for losing him to free agency.
Compensatory picks can’t be traded, but with trades still a possibility for their other draft picks, the number of selections for the 49ers will likely change from now and until draft day. But if they hold onto all of their draft picks they will have a league-high with 14. Only once has San Francisco used 14 draft picks on players, back in 1978, when they made 15 selections. However, that was when the NFL Draft lasted 12 rounds. In 1994, the NFL changed the draft to only seven rounds. Since then, the Miami Dolphins are the only team to have used 14 draft picks on players, which was in 1997.
It is highly unlikely the 49ers will hold onto all of their picks as they already have an overloaded roster and roster spots will be hard to come by. Still, it is a nice problem to have as they have the draft picks to either trade for an established player, or to trade up during the draft to select someone who can contribute right away, like at safety.
