The urgency for the San Francisco 49ers to sign a top-notch safety became more apparent with the news that Dashon Goldson will not be in a Red and Gold uniform in 2013. On Wednesday, the 49ers will host former Green Bay Packers safety Charles Woodson to evaluate his interest in signing with San Francisco.
Woodson was released by the Packers on February 15 with two years remaining on his contract. It has been reported the Packers cut him because of financial reason and not because he is no longer effective at safety. He is 36 years old and is not the same elite safety he has been in recent seasons. But he is still reliable at safety and would provide the Niners with a good pair to along with Donte Whitner.
The 49ers have two advantages over other teams in signing Woodson. Jim Harbaugh and Woodson are both alumni of the University of Michigan where they were both stars at the college. Also, Woodson has already lived in the Bay Area when he played for the Oakland Raiders for the first eight years of his career. In addition, Woodson wants to play for a contender.
Woodson’s Numbers From 2012: 38 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 5 passes defensed, 1 forced fumble, 1 interception.
