With the Seattle Seahawks pulling off a trade for WR Percy Harvin earlier this morning, the San Francisco 49ers not to be out done, made a splash of their own in acquiring WR Anquan Boldin. The news comes as a huge surprise to Niner fans considering Boldin was not in any trade rumors whatsoever. The three-time Pro Bowler will now have the opportunity to become the complimentary wide receiver the 49ers have been desperately in need of opposite of WR Michael Crabtree.
The trade seems to be a lopsided one as the 49ers only had to give up a sixth-round pick as compensation. Boldin who also played for the Arizona Cardinals (2003-2009) and Baltimore Ravens (2010-2012) brings a physical presence to the wide receiver position that has not been seen since WR Terrell Owens was shipped off to Philadelphia, as Boldin is strong, fast, and aggressive. A mean streak that can not be denied, Boldin will also instantly become a legitimate red-zone target on fade routes.
In Boldin’s 10-year career he has racked up 772 receptions, 10,165 receiving yards and 58 touchdowns. The trade is pending upon Boldin passing a physical, that will not be taking place anytime soon as he is currently serving on a mission in Africa.
Boldin’s future with the the Ravens was in limbo, especially after QB Joe Flacco’s record contract and the Ravens trying to free up cap space to re-sign one of their own prized free-agents in LB Dannell Ellerbe.
The news is great for 49ers fans, as the Niners clearly got the better end of the deal, as sixth-round picks rarely make the active roster let alone become household names. What a steal! What are your thoughts? Please comment below.
