In another round of interviews, San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh took the podium this afternoon in Indianapolis, to discuss 49ers football as well as being on the NFL Network’s Path To The Draft. Read his transcript below.
In regards to QB Alex Smith…
The main thing is that Alex is an excellent football player…He’s really playing the best football of his career the last two years…We think we got the best quarterback situation in the National Football League, I feel strongly about that. And again that will be a process that plays out, I mean Alex Smith continuing to be a 49er, or if a trade occurs in the next weeks or months, those are the two possibilities, the most likely possibilities.
In regards to a NFL prospect lying or being dishonest during an interview with the team…
Something that’s not truthful, that’s big, to me. I’m a big fan of the Judge Judy show, and when you lie in Judge Judy’s court room, it’s over. Your credibility is completely lost, you stand no chance of winning that case, so I learned that from her. And it’s very powerful and true. Cause if someone does lie to you, then how can you ever trust anything that they ever say after that? Ronald Reagan another person of great wisdom and advice, “trust but we will verify.”
In regards to his brother who is the basketball coach for the Indiana Hoosiers…
I had a chance to go to their practice on Wednesday, I can tell you it made me want to be a better coach. It made me want to have better practices. One of the finest practices I’ve seen, football or basketball team go through…attention was there, coaches coaching players, players coaching each other, and holding each other accountable. It was really good. I got some good notes, and going to make some of our practices better.
Hey Jim, can you take us back a couple years ago? Colin Kaepernick what you saw here, what lead you to want to draft him, and just about the whole process with him here?
That’s why I get so excited coming here, to the combine! Because already you have favorites. You have guys that your championing. You have discussions, watching tape on players, already been in some disagreements, you still come with an open mind, but there’s a little bit of that’s my guy! And there’s some guys like that this year…And with Colin by the time we’d come here for that combine two years ago, that was the guy that we were championing. Couldn’t wait to meet him, couldn’t wait to be around him, couldn’t wait to get in the interview room with him. And he lit up that room, and just had a ball. We were just laughing, and this is our guy, kind of thing.
What do you want to see from Geno Smith, to make that statement, yes! I should be taken in the top 10, maybe even the top five?
The thing you want to see from all these guys is just come out and compete. Compete like maniacs. Whether they’re throwing the ball, or running the 40, or bench pressing…If they just have a great attitude, and have a great work ethic, then there is no situation, there’s no circumstance in this world, that will keep you from being great. I really believe that.
What is the characteristics in these kids out here you see, that you say, “That’s a Niner!”
The thing you look for the most, is the tape. The production, how they play football. That’s the greatest share of everything. There’s a lot of other things that go into it, we just talked about attitude, we just talked about work ethic. And a lof of other things you want to find out about these guys and verify.
