Last week, Niner Noise asked in a poll if the San Francisco 49ers should re-sign Randy Moss. In this week’s edition we are polling to see what Niner fans want the front office to do with free agent safety Dashon Goldson.
On Monday, a two-week window opened for general manager Trent Baalke to place the franchise tag on Goldson. This would guarantee the safety would play for the 49ers next season, but it would be a one-year deal. Goldson was franchised tagged last off-season and played the past two seasons under one-year contracts. Undoubtedly, Dashon wants a long-term contract and would prefer not to receive the franchise tag again.
The franchise tag, it’s cool. It’s not that bad with the money, but everybody wants security. In the job that I do, and the position I play, there’s a lot that comes with the territory. Security is something that you want at my position, for sure. (Dashon Goldson)
Free agency begins March 12 and the 49ers not only have to decide about Goldson, but also free agents Leonard Davis, Ted Ginn Jr, Larry Grant, Clark Haggans, Ricky Jean Francois, Randy Moss and Isaac Sopoaga.
Goldson has been selected to the Pro Bowl the past two seasons and started every game in 2012. The 49ers will retain Goldson, but there is still the possibility he will receive the franchise tag. While that would be good money for Goldson, it might alienate him enough not to re-sign with the 49ers in the future.
