San Francisco 49ers Director of Player Personnel Tom Gamble has been a hot commodity throughout the year. He had been rumored to become the new General Manager of the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, and San Diego Chargers. However, none of those opportunities came to fruition, and as a result Gamble remained in San Francisco, until today.
Gamble was hired today by the Philadelphia Eagles as their new Vice President Of Player Personnel. The same position he held with the 49ers, Gamble will now be working with new head coach Chip Kelly. As with most things, everything comes full circle, as Gamble will now go back to his roots in Philly, where he first started as a Personnel evaluator in 1988.
GM Trent Baalke, appreciates all Gamble has done for the 49ers organization, releasing a statement saying:
I would like to thank Tom for his hard work, dedication and loyalty over the past eight seasons. He has played an instrumental role within our personnel department, and is a true professional in every sense of the word. As a friend, I will always appreciate the relationship we have, and wish him and his family all the best.
The Eagles know they got a good one in Gamble, as Eagles GM Howie Roseman said:
He’s not only a talented evaluator, but also a good man and the type of person you want as a part of your team. Tom and I have had a great relationship over the years, and I know he’s excited to come home.
Baalke will now have to do his due diligence in finding Gamble’s replacement. Possible in-house candidates include Joel Patton (Director of College Scouting), Matt Malaspina (National College Scout) and Ethan Waugh (Senior Personnel Assistant).
