The San Francisco 49ers today announced the signing of S Michael Thomas to a reserve/future contract. Thomas a converted safety, spent time on the 49ers practice squad this year as an undrafted free-agent. A Stanford product, Thomas is regarded as a “heady” player according to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and was only a handful of players to be featured in the nickel role along with CB Carlos Rogers and CB Perrish Cox, during last year’s training camp.
Thomas although a smart player, will unlikely make the 49ers active roster, unless he absolutely shines on special teams, as FS Dashon Goldson, SS Donte Whitner, and FS C.J. Spillman already entrenched at their respective positions.
Thomas had a productive but unspectacular career at Stanford appearing in 51 games (24 starts) while registering 189 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 12.5 tackles for loss, five interceptions, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and 30 passes defensed.
