There has been rumors swirling around the Bay Area that QB Alex Smith is requesting for his team’s release after Super Bowl XLVII. Although, that may be true, now is not the time to be discussing off-season possibilities. Smith is due $7.5 million, fully guaranteed if he’s on the roster after April 1.
Even though, it is safe to say, he is as good as gone, releasing him is not an option for GM Trent Baalke. The 49ers front office will do everything they can to trade Smith, getting a return on their investment. With a weak draft class this year, Baalke has great bargaining power working in his favor, with teams such as, the Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals all looking for quarterback help.
With the NFL Draft just three months away, look for some potential suitors to arise as the Super Bowl comes to a close.
