The New York Jets are shopping cornerback Darrelle Revis and the San Francisco 49ers along with the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots are all reportedly interested. The Niners interest has been categorized by some as “highly interested”.
Revis is without a doubt one of the most talented players in football and his addition to a unit that is already in my view the best defensive unit in football would be special. Once you’re done imagining #24 in the 49ers defensive backfield let’s come back to reality here, I don’t see this happening for one reason, cost.
The 49ers have several players to resign and extend in the near future starting with safety Dashon Goldson this off season. In the next couple years the team will also have to work out extensions with quarterback Colin Kaepernick who is still on his rookie deal, offensive lineman Mike Iupati and Anthony Davis, wide receiver Michael Crabtree all come to mind as players who will deserve nice contracts over the next few years.
General manager Trent Baalke and cap guru Paraag Marathe have done an exceptional job of keeping this team together and putting the future cap in a position that they can keep this special group of mostly young players together. But let’s not forget this team will need to replace Justin Smith before too long, mid level players need to be signed and resigned, every year a new draft class comes in, a lot of moving parts and it’s hard to see how they could change course and bring in a player who is expected to demand top dollar with his new contract, the Jets can’t afford him and that’s why they are shopping him, I don’t see how the 49ers could do it.
Of course anything is possible, maybe the team wouldn’t mind sending Alex Smith and a mid round pick for a one year rental? Maybe they are just kicking the tires? Or maybe the 49ers will strike absolute gold and the Jets will be willing to take Smith, Carlos Rogers and say Jonathan Goodwin giving the team enough cap flexibility to make the move. Maybe all that would come together as trade parameters and the Jets would allow the 49ers time to discuss a contract extension before executing the trade and maybe Revis would accept less money to play for a Super Bowl team. That’s a whole lot of maybes and maybe I’ll walk out of my house and find a bag filled with a billion dollars, anything is possible, that doesn’t mean it’s likely to happen.
What I believe is happening here is the Niners brass see’s one of the best players in the NFL on the market and they want to do their due diligence. Nothing wrong with that but I really can’t imagine a scenario where all those maybe’s I mentioned above actually come together. Revis will get traded this off season, likely to a team willing to pay him like he’s a QB and send the Jets a ransom for him, just don’t expect that team to be the 49ers.
