With 49ers kicker David Akers struggling and no longer as accurate as last season, San Francisco responded by signing veteran kicker Billy Cundiff. After breaking the NFL record for most points by a kicker and most field goals made in a single season last year, Akers has missed 13 field goal attempts this season.
The season started out well for Akers when he tied an NFL all-time record for distance with a 63-yard field goal all the way back in Week 1. Since then, Akers has not been reliable and Jim Harbaugh hinted on Monday that Akers might lose his job after he said,
There will always be a level of competition around here at any position to find who gives you the best chance to win the next game. Knowing the competitor that Dave is, I don’t think he’ll have a problem with that.
With Cundiff being signed it does not mean Akers will be released. The two are expected to fight for the kicking job over the next week at practice. Cundiff has been in the league for nine seasons and he was released by the Redskins after he started the season making just 7-of-12 field goal attempts. In case you forgot, Cundiff was the kicker who missed a potential game tying 32-yard field goal attempt at the end the AFC Championship last season. The miss cost the Ravens a chance to beat the Patriots and advance to the Super Bowl.
