49ers defensive end Justin Smith missed practice for the third straight time on Friday, indicating he may not be available on Sunday night against the Seattle Seahawks. Should Smith miss the game because of an elbow injury, his streak of 185 straight starts will be snapped. The streak is third longest among active players.

More importantly, losing Smith would make the already tough task of stopping the Seahawks rushing attack even more daunting. After Smith went out in the second half at New England last week, Ricky Jean Francois played well and contributed a crucial sack of Tom Brady late in the game. Jim Harbaugh said Smith has spent this week doing rehabilitation, strengthening and conditioning. He is questionable to play

The 49ers listed four other players as questionable for Sunday night’s game that include wide receiver Mario Manningham (shoulder), defensive tackle Will Tukuafu (concussion) and linebackers Tavares Gooden (ribs) and Clark Haggans (shoulder). The 49ers offense could use Manningham back on the field to give Colin Kaepernick another deep threat against Seattle’s defense. The wide receiver missed last weeks game and has been limited at practice this week.

Several key players returned to action for the Seahawks, practicing on a limited basis Friday, including cornerbacks Walter Thurmond (hamstring) and Marcus Trufant (hamstring), and receiver Sidney Rice (knee). All three will need to work out before the game to make sure they’re ready to go, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said.

Cornerback Richard Sherman, was not at practice for the second straight day because of an appeal hearing on Friday, but Carroll said as of now they’re planning on having Sherman available.
