UPDATE: The Jaguars have claimed Jason Babin off waivers.
The Philadelphia Eagles released defensive end Jason Babin today and he is now on the waiver wire for other teams to claim. Babin signed with the Eagles in 2011, marking his second stint with the team. He had been playing well with 26 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles this season. With the Eagles in a downward spiral since the beginning of October, the team likely released him to be freed of his 5-year, $28 million contract.
Should the San Francisco 49ers sign Babin? They could use his help to add depth that does not exist on the defensive line. The 49ers have Ricky Jean Francois and Demarcus Dobbs as their backups at defensive tackle. Jean Francois has shown signs of being a starter in the few times he has seen action on the field, but Dobbs is an untested D-lineman in the regular season.
Babin, however, would likely want to go to a team where he can start. Plus, the Niners may not want to take on the rest of his $1.69 million salary he is owed the rest of the season to have him sit on the bench. While he was in Philadelphia, Babin played in a 4-3 base defense and he might not be the best fit in the 49ers 3-4 defense. Also, as a contending team, the Niners are low on the waiver wire. A fan can wish, right?
