Contenders or Pretenders: A Look Around the NFL

Denver Broncos

Record 3-3

Why they will- Well they were able to get into the playoffs and win a game with Tebow at the helm, Peyton Manning has to be able to improve on that right? The schedule opens up for them the rest of the way and they are already leading the AFC West.

Why they won’t- They aren’t good enough to beat great football teams. They will make the playoffs, but Manning hasn’t proved much there. I dare you to argue that one. His lone Superbowl winning run he had over twice as many interceptions as touchdowns in the playoffs.

Status: Contender

San Diego Chargers

Record 3-3

Why they will- They only play 1 team with a winning record the rest of the season. Odds are if they can win 9 games they should make the playoffs.

Why they won’t- This team is built to crumble. How on Earth you can have a 24 point lead at half and fall apart is beyond me. They look for new ways to disappoint their fan base. The sad part is the fans are rooting for this team to fail that way Norv Turner can be fired.

Status: Pretender

Indianapolis Colts

Record 3-3

Why they will- They have heart and it seems like every year there is a feel-good story that captures the league. Oh, and that guy behind center is the best rookie quarterback this league has ever seen.

Why they won’t- They are lacking talent. Luck won’t put up the numbers as some other guys, but that’s because of the core around him. Remember Peyton went 3-13 his first season with more interceptions that touchdowns.

Status: Pretender

Pittsburgh Steelers

Record 3-3

Why they will- It’s a successful organization, all they do is win. This team knows how to handle adversity and has enough playmakers to beat any team. Ben Roethlisberger is having one of his best seasons.

Why they won’t- Injuries and old age has caught up with this team. The quarterback and offensive coordinator don’t get along so winning is the only deodorant they can use for the situation.

Status: Contender

Miami Dolphins

Record 3-3

Why they will- They are a surprise team this year. They are 3-3 and have 2 overtime losses. That’s a couple of coin flips from 5-1. They have fight, Tannehill is better than I expected, and their next 4 games are against the Jets, Colts, Titans, and Bills. If the playoffs were to start today they would make it in.

Why they won’t- They aren’t going to win their division and they have already dropped a game against the Jets. At most only 2 teams are coming out of this division and they aren’t the second best team in it.

Status: Pretender

Dallas Cowboys

Record 3-3

Why they will- They have offensive weapons and they have great corners. In a passing league those are big pluses. Demarcus Ware isn’t too shabby either.

Why they won’t- They are a mediocre team and have been right at .500 for the past decade. They aren’t getting past the Giants for the division, so that leaves them fighting for a wild-card. With that said they have already lost to both Seattle and Chicago, so it will be hard to get past them in the standings. They are poor at clock management and are heavily penalized, which comes down to the coach.

Status: Pretender

Philadelphia Eagles

Record 3-3

Why they will- Firing their defensive coordinator will send a message that they will either win this year or they are out. Andy Reid typically responds well when given this ultimatum. This upcoming game against Atlanta is pivotal. The eagles have never lost coming out of a bye with Reid.

Why they won’t- So many “experts” had them as a favorite in the NFC. They’ve been overrated since Vick took over. 5 of their 6 games have come down to a field goal or less.

Status: Pretender

In the end it will come down to two of these contenders. I don’t think any of the teams not listed will make a Cinderella type comeback and win it all, and I believe a lot of these teams that are in a decent position right now aren’t set up for the long haul.

This NFL season has featured a great more deal of parity compared to the last few seasons, which is what makes this league so fun to watch.

Who do you think should be the team or teams to beat this NFL season?
