With the NFL season finally underway and the San Francisco 49ers officially 1-0 after upending the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau Field, it’s time to relaunch my weekly segment here on Niner Noise, Hamm’s Pigskins of the Week Awards!
Offense: Alex Smith, Alex outplayed Aaron Rogers, last seasons MVP who threw 45 touchdown passes to only six interceptions. In his last three games, Smith has outplayed two of the best QBs in the NFL in Drew Brees and Rogers, pretty impressive.
Smith looked poised, confident and he delivered. All but three of Alex’s completions went to wide receivers as he spread the ball around to Michael Crabtree, Randy Moss, Mario Manningham and tight end Vernon Davis.
other considerations: Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree, Randy Moss
Defense: Navarro Bowman, Navarro was an animal out there on Sunday. His interception of Rogers was a huge turning point in the game. The momentum was starting to swing towards Green Bay and the home crowd at Lambeau started to believe. That is, until Bowman took the air right out of them with his huge INT.
Playing almost exclusively in the dime package against GBs spread out offense, the 49er inside linebacker duo of Bowman and Patrick Willis rotated for much of the game and Bowman had the better game of the two. Bowman isn’t quite on Willis’ level yet, but it’s awfully close and he has solidified himself as the second best ILB in the NFL.
other considerations: Chris Culliver, Ray McDonald, Justin Smith, Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks
Hamm’s Pick: David Akers, Akers’ tied the NFL all time record with a 63 yard field goal at the end of the first half. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said Akers may potentially be the best kicker of all time. Akers had the best season of any kicker in history last season making an amazing 44 FGs. Anytime you make history, you get a Pigskin.
Who will capture Hamm’s Pigskins next week? Check back next week here at Niner Noise to find out.
