Poll: What Impact Will Aldon Smith Being Stabbed Have On the 49ers Season?

Details are still emerging about Aldon Smith being stabbed in the back at a house party he was hosting early Saturday morning.  What we do know is Smith sustained minor injuries after being stabbed in the back trying to break up a fight.  Officers described the scene as “pretty chaotic when law enforcement arrived.”

Yesterday, I wrote Smith was a victim and still believe that is the case.  Having said that, Smith did not do himself any favors by having over 100 people at his house party when officers arrived after 2 a.m. on Saturday.  It has been reported that neighbors said Smith regularly has large parties at his house.  Smith is free to have parties at his house as much as he wants.  What he does not realize is when an incident like what happened on Saturday occurs, the consequences are felt not only by the linebacker, but by the whole 49ers organization as well.

I would call this a onetime slip-up by Smith who will understand what he did wrong, learn from it and move on.  But at the beginning of the year he was arrested for a DUI in Miami Beach.  So this is his second, serious, lapse of judgment in five months.  If Smith cannot see he is displaying a pattern of problems, he won’t last long with the 49ers or in the NFL.

Jim Harbaugh, Trent Baalke and 49ers veteran leadership will most likely have a talk with Smith about his behavior in the offseason and how he needs to focus on the upcoming season.  Chances are Harbaugh tried setting Smith straight after the DUI arrest but to have another bad incident happen, means he was not listening.  This new problem has to infuriate Harbaugh.

Bottom line, Smith needs to start making better decisions when it comes to his social life and who he surrounds himself with.

  • Huge Impact: Smith is a big part of the 49ers dominate defense and this only distract him and the team throughout the season. (11%, 32 Votes)
