With the new NFL schedule now released I want to go down memory lane for a bit. The San Francisco 49ers had a fantastic 2011 season, ending the regular season with a 13-3 record. It was a season that many Niner fans have been waiting for a long time. During the tough years in which Niner fans saw lost after lost, where I would tell myself things like, “it will get better” and “maybe next year.” The winning ways in San Fran are finally back. There were many great memories from last season and makes me wonder what Niner game was the best. Obviously every Niner fan will say the divisional playoff game versus the New Orleans Saints (in my opinion it was the NFL game of the year), but I want to focus on the regular season. Drum row please……..here is my choice.
49ers @ Lions Week 6
First of all the buildup was great. We had two teams that had not been contenders for many years and now all of a sudden the Lions were 5-0 and the Niners were 4-1. The game had so much appeal that it became the nationally televised game on FOX in the mourning time slot. That whole week I could not wait to see the game, especially since many were picking against the Niners.
The game started rough with a Alex Smith fumble and the Niners saw themselves quickly down 10-0. The Niners never had quit in them the entire season and battled back to take a 12-10 halftime lead. In the second half, both teams were trading leads until the Niners were faced with a game(and season) defining drive. Alex Smith led his team to the red zone where they would later face a fourth and goal. Alex would hit TE Delanie Walker one a slant to give them the lead and the 25-19 win.
The play to Walker was awesome, but the game was filled with great plays. RB Frank Gore broke a couple of thirty plus yard runs and gave the Niners momentum, the game also featured LB Aldon Smith’s coming out party. The rookie had two sacks, a safety, and a forced fumble. Alex proved how clutch he can be in a close game and the Niners finally gained the respect from the entire league.
Also let’s not forget the incident between coaches Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz, where Harbaugh gave Schwartz a “hard” pat in the back that Schwartz did not like. Schwartz would chase Harbaugh down the field until the two had to be separated (the situation was over blown, but it was cool).
Well that is my choice. I believe that game showed what kind of team the Niners were in 2011. A team that never quit, had great composure, and different players made plays when they had too. Awesome season! We’ll see what kind of new exciting games the 2012 schedule brings to us. GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to know what YOU believe was the best Niner game from last season (remember not counting the Saints game). Or is my game the right choice. Please leave your comments.
