A Look At The 49ers Roster To Date

The NFL Free Agency period can be a dizzying and confusing fan experience.  So many players switching teams via FA, trade, veterans being cut, salary cap space, cap penalties for some teams who broke the rules, draft strategy.  Then coaches getting fired, suspended, players coming out of retirement, QB legends crying at a press conference with the owner of their former team as they part ways.  It’s a wild ride for sure and the 49ers have had about as wild of a ride as any team in the NFL.

Things started out looking like it would be a slow developing, quiet off season for the 49ers.  Then the team signed WR Randy Moss before FA even started.  Found a way to bring back the entire defense with quality long term, team friendly contracts to OLB Ahmad Brooks and CB Carlos Rogers, while slapping the franchise tag on S Dashon Goldson.  Then things went back to normal with only small nominal signings of guys that would fight for roster spots or were brought on mainly for their special teams contributions like CB/PR Perrish Cox or RB/KR Rock Cartwright.

Then just like that, things exploded in San Francisco, well is started in Durham North Carolina to be exact.  News spread like wild fire that the 49ers were in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes.  No wonder Alex Smith had yet to resign?  Speculation ran wild last Friday and got even juicier when Smith flew to Miami to meet with the Dolphins.  Manning eventually signed with the Broncos and after Smith’s other potential suitors the Dolphins and Seahawks went in other directions at QB, Smith and SF finally agreed on a new three year deal. Oh yeah, and somewhere in between the Niners agreed to a deal with former Giants WR Mario Manningham that took almost a week to actually get signed/announced leading to worried speculation from the fan-base that the deal had hit a snag or Manningham was no longer interested in SF with Manning in Denver.

It looked as if WR/KR Ted Ginn Jr would be headed elsewhere all off season.  He spoke candidly about wanting a more expanded role as a WR and didn’t want to be known as only a return man.  Visits to Detroit, Minnesota and Baltimore and a rumored three year, $7.5 million offer from the 49ers that went unsigned nearly confirmed what many had feared.  Then in a surprise move, a deal that feels a lot like last years deal with then FA Dashon Goldson, Ginn signed a one year deal to return to the team. That very same day the team finally officially announced the Manningham deal along with another surprising twist.  Former San Diego State QB Josh Johnson who played under coach Jim Harbaugh during the coaches first stint as a head coach in his college days.  Johnson signed a two year deal with the team adding even more drama to the fire that is the 49ers QB situation.  Although Harbaugh has made it clear to Johnson that Alex Smith is the starter this season.

Great move, getting back Teddy G. !  I wish it would have been a 3-year contract, he’s good for the long-term.  Even greater move getting Josh Johnson, as has been suggested all along.  If we can afford it, I’d keep 4 QB on the roster, they are all fine prospects with great potential who can play at the NFL level.  Now get first-rate O-line depth to protect them and we will be unstoppable.

I agree it was a great move bringing him back but I don’t want him n a long term deal.  He’s fragile and does nothing at WR.  We can probably get a WR or RB who can return kicks in one of the next 2 drafts.
