After an exhausting two weeks that started with wild speculation as to why Alex Smith had yet to resign with the San Francisco 49ers. Only later to be revealed that Jim Harbaugh and Trent Baalke went on a secret ops mission to North Carolina and watched Peyton Manning. Then 49er fans were taken for an even bigger ride when it was revealed that along with the Titans and Manning’s eventual landing spot the Broncos, the Niners were in the “Manning Final 3″.
As Manning drug his feet and delayed his decision more and more and the flirtation between franchise and player became public, the dilemma began. Alex flew to Miami to flirt with career suicide, I mean the Dolphins and it was rumored he was even talking contract with the fins. Then a report surfaced that Smith was willing to play #2 and wait on Manning’s decisions. Peyton finally chose Denver and the healing began. I hope you sense my sarcasm here or I’m not doing my job that well. Alex was clearly upset at both the 49ers contract offer which he seemingly could have signed before the Niners ever had a chance to ask Peyton to the prom. But he was also hurt that the team ever flirted with Manning in the first place. This I find amazing considering he’s Peyton Manning and Alex Smith is well, Alex Smith. But that’s another column for another time. For now, it’s over 49er fans, we finally know who our starting QB is going to be for 2012. The same one it’s been the last seven years or so, Alex Smith.
Smith and the 49ers agreed to a three year deal worth $8 million a season but as much as $33 million overall and $16.5 million guaranteed. That’s a big step up from the three year, $24 million, $10 guaranteed deal that was rumored to be on the table since before the start of free agency. The exact breakdown of the contract is still coming out in bits and pieces. Details such as the signing bonus and breakdown of the deal have yet to be revealed. When those terms are known they will be updated in Niner Noises’s 49ers Free Agency Tracker.
