Report: Alex Smith Willing to Wait on Peyton Manning's Decision

In another episode of as the quarterback turns.  QB Alex Smith spent more than five hours negotiating Sunday with the Miami Dolphins.  Wide spread fear amongst the 49ers fan base settled in all over.  Fear of a QB doomsday in which Smith would sign with Miami and Peyton Manning would end up in Tennessee or Denver, leaving the 49ers to look stupid in this whole thing.  Not to mention leaving them with only second year signal caller Colin Kaepernick for the upcoming season.  That fear spread to full on panic when reports out of South Beach surfaced that the Dolphins were prepared to, or already had offered Alex a multi-year deal worth around $8 million year.

It is now being reported that Smith will wait to see where Manning signs before doing anything.  He will not sign with the Dolphins after a reported five hours of negotiations.   The rumors go on to say that Smith will not even sign if Miami offers more money than the rumored 3 year/$24 million deal the 49ers offered.

It has been widely report that Manning will make his decision Monday or Tuesday.  After Manning makes his Lebron like decision (minus the ESPN TV special of course) expect Smith to sign quickly.  The current situation leaves nothing for certain, but it was reported by just about everyone covering the team that the 49ers and confirmed by the organization and Alex himself that a 3 year contract proposal was on the table.

Depending on which rumor you listened to, Alex either wanted more years, more money, or was simply allowing the team to fill the rest of their offseason duties before finalizing the details of his own contract.  But for whatever reason, Alex did not sign that contract and on Friday reports that the 49ers had in fact flown to North Carolina to work out Manning and put him through a physical surfaced.  Now with Manning’s final three known to be the Titans, Broncos and 49ers, it became obvious to all, including Smith, Alex was no longer their #1 choice at QB, it was Peyton.  So Alex took the trip to Miami on Sunday and reportedly had a visit set up with division rival Seattle this week before they came to terms with Matt Flynn.

Manning holds all the chips and once he falls, the domino’s will roll.  If he signs with anyone other than San Francisco.  Expect the 49ers and Smith to get a deal done within 24 hours.  If he were to land in Tennessee, expect either Miami or Denver to possibly engage the Titans in trade discussions for Matt Hasselback.  And if Manning does land with the Niners, Smith may find himself in a position of power.  Miami will be desperate for a QB after being spurned by both Manning and Flynn.  With Chad Henne already in Jacksonville and the top two QBs in the draft out of the questions, they may overpay for Smith.  Denver could also be interested in Alex, even if for only a few years.  One things for sure, a lot is riding on Mannings decision and not just what fanbase will instantly buy millions of #18 jerseys when he signs in their city.  He has the future of several other NFL QBs and franchises in the palm of his hand (or infused in his neck I’m not so sure anymore).
