Should the 49ers Draft A Guard

With the upcoming combine pay close attention to the offensive linemen as should one of the top guards fall look for the Niners to make a move to get one. So why the guard its simple both Adam Snyder and Chilo Richal are free agents and probably won’t return. Second the biggest need Wide Receiver should be filled by a top notch free agent and not a rookie.

The 49ers had a few issues on offense and while the high profile skill position of Receiver has been on everyone’s mind and for good reason. Yet it was the offensive line that gave up over 40 sacks and had a terrible time in short yardage. How many times did the niners get to first and goal from the 5 yard line and were unable to run the ball? On several 1 yard goal line runs and 3rd downs the Niners failed to convert which led to field goals and punts. The Niners line was probably the one area of the team that was effected by the lockout more than any other. The top two draft picks from the year prior did not get to work out with position coaches and condition themselves properly. The line is also very young except for center and adding another young guard could give the niners a top notch line for many years to come.  Should the Niners get a guard with their first pick it would require a couple things to happen and the current mock drafts don’t look favorable? The first guard to be off the board will be Stanfords David Decastro who is considered a top 15 pick which would be extremely high for a guard and I would be shocked should he be picked that high. In past drafts guards are mid to late first round at best and should the draft hold true to form Decastro will be drafted 19 – 24  and should he fall closer to the 24 number the Niners may be on the phone trying to make a deal. Coach Harbaugh knows this player and his talents he is a perfect fit for the Niners and while he is a long shot to drop that far crazier things have happened. The next Guard and more likely to be available is Cordy Glenn of Georgia ranked as high as 22nd but he should be available toward the end of the round as some mock going as late as 27th. Of course these mock drafts will change a bunch once we see what happens in free agency and the combine.

On the Wide Receiver front with a rookie that may be the fifth  one taken in the first round is a crap shoot and what is considered one of the toughest positions to play as a rookie. It only makes sense for the niners to go after a proven commodity and the talk that the Niners don’t go after big name free agents is just not true. In the past the Niners have gone after several big name free agents and paid a lot of money and they were nowhere near the position they are in now. This is a team that was minutes away from the superbowl and 30 million dollars under the cap before losing some players and ability to restructure contracts if needed. Free Agenccy opens in a couple weeks and by March 5th the franchise tags will have been placed.

The Niners are in a unique position to not only land a top reciever and with a new stadium on the horizon it is important to keep the fan base frenzied to sell seats. This leaves the Niners in perfect position to draft a guard and fill a real void on offense.
