NFC Championship: No Respect Yet for the San Francisco 49ers

What is it going to take to earn respect in the world of football? The San Francisco 49ers has won every way they could possibly win a football game this season yet it does not matter. The media has already decided for the most part the Giants and Patriots will be in a Super Bowl rematch.  I guess they did not see the games this weekend and chose to do other stuff like watch some highlights and go with the old guard. I do understand that the new kids on the block has to do more to get recognition and have a larger body of work to prove they belong but come on.

Going into this weekend the Saints were the hottest team in football. They were said to be unstoppable on offense with a great run pass balance. The Niners were a three and a half point underdog at home. The only way the Niners could beat the Saints was to keep Drew Brees on the sideline by running the ball and converting third downs. The Niners did none of that and still pulled off a victory.  The 49ers held the Saints scoreless in the third quarter with little to no help from the offense putting any kind of drive of their own together.  When the Niners Defense finally cracked under the pressure of the Saints relentless offense and gave up big plays for touchdowns. The Niners answered right back with drives that were executed to perfection.  When all said and done the Saints, the hottest offense in football with no cogs in the wheels, no long layoffs nor any other excuse for not playing the best football they are capable of playing, were defeated by the Niners.

The Giants went to Green Bay to play the Packers and the plain and simple, the Packers played as bad as I have seen all year. They dropped balls left and right, made mistakes on defense and were unable to play the way they are capable of playing. I don’t want to take anything away from the Giants. They made the plays and took advantage of the opportunity’s handed to them. It is just when the only thing you got going for you is a high scoring precision offense and you are not in sync, you will beat no one with the 32nd ranked defense.  So now the Media anoints the Giants the hottest team in football and has them going to the Super Bowl after a tune up in San Francisco.

The media love affair with the Patriots is just as nauseating as they are also Super Bowl bound and a 7 point favorite. Once again they failed to watch the games and I bet Vegas are counting on people to buy into the hype of this incredible media love of the Pats to convince you to take the Pats. The top two offenses in all of football have fallen and the Patriots are no different.  Yes they convincingly beat the Broncos and toyed with them all game long but didn’t they do that a few weeks ago? Not much changed between their meetings so why would the outcome be any different?  The Ravens are a far better team than the Broncos and have dominated the Pats in Foxboro not too long ago.

So while the media has picked the Super Bowl for now, as it gets closer and they start to do their homework they will have a hard time coming around but some will.  Warren Sapp was the Lone Wolf this last weekend on the NFL Network picking the winners and losers, and he will get some company this week. There comes a time when a team has to be respected in the media. It will probably take a Super Bowl win to convince  the masses of the media to pay attention and understand that the Niners are back and are here to stay.

5 things we have to do to beat the Giants again:

    1) Pressure Manning

    2) Stuff Bradshaw/Jacobs

    3) PROTECT ALEX, particularly on third down if they stack 7. New Orleans did it again and again, and we didn’t really have an answer.

    4) Double-team Nicks and watch for Cruz underneath.

    5) Run the ball control game, keeping it away from Manning. We should have done it earlier against Brees, we can’t keep giving Manning the ball either.

Loved all of it vs. N.O, particularly our special teams play: C. Jones, C. Spillman, B. Constanzo, A. Lee, D. Akers – SUPERB. Let’s keep it up.

One last thing – keep Phil Simms away from commenting this live feed. If I have to hear one more game of that guy babbling incessant nasal nonsense about how “he faked outsiiiiiiiiide, then went insiiiiiiiiiiiiide” I think I’m going to get my Nutcracker Flail, string him up by the toes, flog the living daylights out of him, then apply the pincers to his neck, extremities, or privates until all resistance ceases. Give me Johnston/Albert or Buck/Aikmann any day! Go ‘Niners !!!
