You Know You Want To Play By The Bay Peyton!

Could Peyton Manning Be A 49er in 2012?

It sure is looking more and more like the Indianapolis Colts are going to take Stanford QB Andrew Luck with the 1st overall pick in Aprils draft.  Legendary QB Peyton Manning has a huge 2 year option that has to be picked up before the league year even starts.  If they do, the Colts-Manning marriage is destined to last at least that long.

Don’t buy the crap about them co-existing, that’s hogwash.  Aaron Rogers may be the man now but he wasn’t Andrew Luck coming out of college either.  Him sitting behind Brett Favre is a completely different scenario.  Green Bay was winning with Favre, had a good team and selected Rogers 24th overall, not first overall.  Wherever Luck goes, he is handed the franchise from day 1.

So the Colts have a decision to make.  With Manning s injury they were shown a harsh reality of their team.  They suck to put it bluntly.  Manning is old in football years, he has a very complicated, very serious injury.  No doubt we wouldn’t be having this discussion had Peyton been able to play football this season.  But we’re in the situation we’re in, this kind of feels familiar to me.

It has it’s differences but this is in some ways, similar to the Steve Young, Joe Montana fiasco.  Montana, an aging veteran, still at the top of his game, goes out in a long term injury.  Steve, the younger player, tears it up and the franchise has to decide between the face of its franchise for the last decade.  And the guy that could be the new face for the next decade.  \

I expect the Colts to make the tough decision and cut bait with Manning.  Don’t fool yourselves, teams will line up for Peyton.  He will release tons of medical records from the worlds top doctors (probably James Andrews).  He will workout in a closed session for selected teams.  And believe me, the 49ers would absolutely be amongst those teams.  If Peyton shows he is healthy enough to play, is cleared by NFL doctors, a team will sign him.

Imagine this scenario, the 49ers the #2 seed in the playoffs.  Loses it’s first or second game.  Go deeper into your imagination and picture Alex Smith having a not so hot game.  The defense plays well, the running game is pretty good, the special teams are stellar.  The cries of this team needs a QB will be very loud.  Harbaugh says he has his QB of the future in Smith, but he has his eye on Colin Kaepernick.  Who clearly isn’t ready.

Manning won’t get anywhere near the money he would from the Colts in his last contract.  If they cut bait before the start of the league year when Peyton is due his bonus and his options pick up for 2 years.  The Colts suffer minimal financial consequences.  The 49ers are in a great situation with the cap.  They have some players to extend/re-sign but they will be fine.  Fitting Peyton in wouldn’t be a problem.

Look around the NFL at teams that could possibly use an upgrade at QB next year.  Then eliminate the teams that couldn’t afford the likes of Manning.  Then take away the teams Peyton obviously wouldn’t be interested in playing for (not wasting my time explaining that he doesn’t want to play for a gutter team).  That doesn’t leave many, in fact, I’m having trouble thinking of one other than the 49ers.

Actually, maybe we should start Kaepernick next year, and keep Alex as a back-up to develop both him and Tolziel. CK might bring some fire, but if he falters, revert to Alex’s safe pair of hands. Other teams might be gunning for Flynn, but we shouldn’t. Saves a lot of free agent money for O-line, D-line, and defensive backfield. With a consistent O-line, we can take it up another notch next year. Go Niners !
