Steelers vs. 49ers: Final Injury Report for Monday Night Football

Injuries to players important to the 49ers and Steelers success this season have somewhat overshadowed the Monday Night Football showdown.  Many of the players injured are listed as questionable and did not either practice or were limited during the past week.  For the 49ers the two biggest injuries are to LT Joe Staley and LB Patrick Willis.  For the Steelers the biggest question mark is QB Ben Roethlisberger who is questionable and starting center Maurkice Pouncey who is out.  The Steelers will also be without LB James Harrison who is suspended for the game.

Staley suffered a concussion last week against the Cardinals but has been cleared to play tonight.  In the game backup Alex Boone took over for Staley and did not play well.  Let’s hope Staley can be effective even with suffering concussion because the 49ers will need him to stop the Steelers defense.  Staley is expected to start.

The other huge question mark for the 49ers is the hamstring injury to Willis.  It does not look good for Willis to play against the Steelers as he did not practice all week and will be a game time decision.  The 49ers showed last week they are vulnerable on defense when Willis is not lurking over the middle of the field.  The quarterback seems more comfortable making plays with number 52 not there.  I doubt Willis will play and backup LB Larry Grant will start for the second week in a row in his place.  Grant is a good backup and can make up for some Willis’ production, but he does not instill fear in QB’s like Willis.

A huge advantage for the 49ers could be an injured Roethlisberger who suffered an ankle sprain last week against the Browns.  Roethlisberger came back into the game but he will be facing a much tougher 49ers D and has been limited in practice all week.  The one advantage the Steelers had over the 49ers was the ten days between their game against the Browns and tonight’s game.  The ten days to rest and limited movement on the ankle in practice could be enough to play effectively.
