49ers running back Frank Gore has been lighting up opponents to the tune of 5 straight 100 yard games-a 49er franchise record. Gore is third in the league in rushing this season and came into Sundays game against the Giants just 149 yards behind 49er great Joe Perry for #1 on the teams All Time career rushing list.
Gore ended the game Sunday still 149 yards away from Joe Perry for #1 on the teams All Time career rushing list. Gore managed 0 yards on just 6 carries and had just 8 yards from scrimmage Sunday. Gore left with a knee injury in the third quarter and watched as Kendall Hunter and Anthony Dixon took over in the backfield. Gore had suffered a injured ankle last week in Washington, Gore played just 1 play in the second half but didn’t carry the ball after halftime.
What Gore says about the injury and my thoughts after the jump
I’m beginning to wonder if the 49ers weren’t covering up a more serious ankle injury in the first place here. The Giants run defense hasn’t been good all season and up until this point the formula has been to feed Gore the rock early and often. Instead the 49ers opened up the passing game and never got Gore going. But even after Gore went out Hunter and Dixon combined for just 7 carries so it may have been the plan to pass the ball more often anyway.
Here’s what Gore had to say on the injury:
“Someone twisted me up,” Gore said. “I felt like I could have played.”
I have wrote many times I believe the team needs to employ more of a 2 RB combination with Gore and Hunter and maybe even sprinkle in a 3rd back but I don’t believe Dixon can be that guy. If Gore gets hurt long term I do believe Hunter can be an effective starting back, but the team needs to consider hard bringing in another big back to supplement. I liked the way Brian Westbrook ran last season when Gore was hurt at the end of the season. He’s fresh, he’s available, he knows the West Coast offense, the players on this team know and respect him.
The 49ers are wasting a roster spot with Moran Norris and should cut him or Dixon and re-sign Westbrook now, the injury to Gore may not be serious but later in the season if he has one that is the team needs insurance beyond a 5-5 180 pound rookie behind him.
8-1 Niner fans, it feels good!
