The 49ers face a big test on Sunday at home where they will face Eli Manning and the 6-2 New York Giants. The Giants are coming off a win vs the New England Patriots in which Manning looked very good leading his team to the win. Running back Ahmad Bradshaw is out with an injury and it will be Brandon Jacobs against the 49ers #1 rush defense (not to mention #1 overall and #1 in points against! not to brag or anything)
Over the past week there has been some talk of could 49ers QB Alex Smith win a game if he were asked to throw the ball 40+ times in a shootout. Greg Roman and Jim Harbaugh of course heaped praise onto Smith, Harbaugh even went as far as saying he believes Smith is an elite QB in the NFL right now. A lot of fans, myself included feel that at some point during this season the 49ers will have to get into a shootout. Some team, somewhere, someday is going to stop Frank Gore and the 49ers rushing attack and they will be forced to pass more. It just won’t happen this week vs the Giants.
Page 2: Why the 49ers will stick to their winning formula this week
This will not be the week Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman “unleash” Alex Smith and open up the offense for a couple of reasons. The biggest being that the Giants cannot stop the run and the 49ers are going to have a field day running the ball against them. The Giants have had trouble with all sorts of runners this year power power and speed backs alike which makes the 49ers combination of Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter a dangerous mix vs. a weak Giants rush D.
I can see a scenario in which the Giants put up a couple of quick scores and the 49ers are behind 10-14 points early. Even if this were to occur don’t expect the 49ers to spread em out and try and beat Eli and the Giants in a show of arms. Jim Harbaugh has a plan, he is a patient man that understands football and he won’t be rattled into changing his game plan until he has to. I put the odds of Frank Gore rushing for 149 yards and breaking the 49ers all time rushing record higher than I do Alex Smith throwing for much more than 200 yards Sunday.
