The 49ers hit on a few free agent bargains this off season but the biggest has to be corner back Carlos Rogers. Rogers signed a 1 year $4 million deal with the team after his market for a lucrative long term deal failed to materialize. Rogers spent the first six seasons with the Redskins came in with the reputation of a good corner with stone hands that couldn’t catch any interceptions. That perception has certainly changed this year as Rogers was tied for the league lead through week 6 with 3 INTs this season.
In short time it seems that Rogers has found a place he wants to call home for a long time in San Francisco:
“If we can get something worked out, that would be great,” Rogers told CSNBayArea.com on Tuesday. “My agent (Todd France) knows that I like what’s going on here. I want to be here. This has been great for me, and I would love to get something worked out for five, six years.”
PAGE 2: WHAT OTHER 49ERS COULD BE UP FOR A CONTRACT EXTENSION THIS SEASON?
The 49ers have already extended running back Frank Gore and now are going into negotiations with CB Carlos Rogers. A few free agents signed 1 year deals with the team after their markets failed to materialize into the long term offers. Wide Receiver Braylon Edwards, Safety Dashon Goldson, Safety Madeiu Williams, Linebackers Larry Grant and Blake Costanzo all signed one year deals and many could be considered in the near future. Goldson is having an outstanding season and while he foolishly turned down a reported 5 year $20+ million deal from the 49ers before having to settle on the 1 year deal he eventually signed it would be wise to lock him up before he hits the free agent market again. He obviously prefers the 49ers and wants to stay here, if he continues to play like he has this season expect the 49ers to put something similar to what they already offered him on the table and a deal to get done before season’s end.
Edwards is the other big FA that signed a “prove it” 1 year deal with the team. In rather short time Edwards established an obvious connection with QB Alex Smith. I expect Edwards to come in and be the #1 WR on most days and make a big impact on the 49ers. While the team has experienced spotty success in the passing game the return of Edwards along with a healthy Michael Crabtree could really open things up for the 49ers. If that happens that would be the only element of the team that isn’t explosive yet and the team would be a superbowl contender. Edwards likes the 49ers at least if you follow his twitter it sure seems like it, he and Harbaugh have the Michigan connection. If all goes right and Edwards can keep his act together and play well I see him being the 4th player after Gore, Rogers and Goldson to sign and extension before the end of the year. Everyone else on the list will have to prove it the rest of the year, maybe Costanzo gets a 1-2 year deal because of his special teams play but I doubt it becomes a priority the team will want to see what it gets from them the rest of the year and what comes to them in the 2012 draft.
