Apparently the 49ers aren’t interested in signing free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens after all. Owens who started his career in 1996 with the 49ers before he forced his way out of town in a trade to the Eagles. 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that he didn’t even know if the 49ers were sending a representative to Owens workout in California today, indicating that the 49er brass has zero interest in him.
This comes as good news to me, Owens has ruined his opportunity everywhere he has gone and the risk would far outweigh the reward of a Owens return to San Francisco. Still though this will disappoint some 49er fans, I was surprised at the results in our recent poll where I asked simply would you like to see TO return to the Red and Gold to which exactly 41% of NinerNoise voters responded both yes and no.
*UPDATE* Zero teams, I repeat zero teams showed up for the TO work out today in Los Angeles today. The media came out in full force and the entire session in which Owens ran around and did agility drills and caught some footballs was filmed. Agent Drew Rosenhaus struck out big here, how can you publically accounce a workout for your client without securing at least 1 team’s promise to show up and evaluate him? The first thought I had when hearing of the news today was that this felt like the Barry Bonds situation. Nobody signed him despite the fact that he publically stated he wanted to play for 2 years after his last season with the Giants. ESPNs Jon Clayton said today on ESPN radio that he gave it between a 15-20% chance Owens would ever get signed by any team this season. If you ask me this is just another case of what goes around comes around, oh and one last cheap shot on my way if you haven’t heard TO is broke so he needs a job in the NFL desperately. This may be the worst day TO has had in a long time, in contrast it was the best day I’ve had since the 49ers last victory, so long TO!
Page 2: My message to those who responded yes they want TO back in SF
For those of you that voted yes here is my response. In a video game and on paper a lineup of TO, Michael Crabtree and Braylon Edwards at WR is awesome. But use your best judgement here and think about this famous quote “If we do not understand our history we are only doomed to repeat it”. If you were around for the TO days in SF then you need to think hard, remember, forget about the numbers he has put up, forget that he probably could help this team on the field. Remember that Trent Baalke and Jim Harbaugh have made great decisions for this team so far, before you get upset the team isn’t showing interest in TO take everything into account, watch TO with whatever team signs him and think would it have been worth the risk? Dollars to Donuts the answer you will come up with when all is said and done is simply no. Just ask the Patriots how their former Bengal reality TV star Chad Ochoi’manidiot has worked out for them.
But still the 49ers have remained silent on everything pretty much since the Harbaugh/Baalke era began. They could come out and sign him and plug him into the lineup in a couple weeks. Crazier things have happend, this is the NFL we’re talking about.
