It seems the nation has taken notice of the stellar play of rookie Aldon Smith who for the 2nd consecutive week was voted by fans as the Pepsi Defensive Player of the Week . Veteran running back Frank Gore who has been on a tear the last few weeks today the NFL announced Gore as the winner of their FedEx Ground Player of the Week award.
Gore and Smith join Patrick Willis and Alex Smith as other 49er weekly player of the week award winners this season. Smith has been extremely impressive ever since he has been given significant playing time this season. He now has 6 sacks on the season, all in the last 3 games and recorded another 2 sacks one for a safety while forcing a fumble on another. Gore ran for 144 yards on just 15 carries for a 9.4 yard per carry average. Gore was unstoppable vs. the Lions and seemed to gain big yardage on almost every run. At one point in the game he had over 100 yards on just 7 carries. Smith seems like the front runner for Rookie Defensive Player of the Year Award right now with his top contender probably being Von Miller.
In other 49er news today it was announced that 49ers owner John York was named chair of the NFL’s safety committee. Youk will lead the new committee on health and medical issues. York, a pathologist has an extensive medical background and seems like a great choice for the NFL.
