The 49ers will travel to Detroit to face the 5-0 Lions in the game of the week, what a wacky world the NFL truly is. The teams are a combined 9-1 this season, this point last year they were a combined 1-9, what a difference a year (or a coach) makes. Both teams will have to shake off big wins and put their confidence aside as they each will face their biggest challenges of the season. The Lions are coming off a short week after hosting the first Monday Night Football game in Detroit in the last decade. The 49ers are coming off their biggest win in the last decade in a 45 point stomping of the Tampa Bay Bucs.
The biggest challenge for each team will be containing the others dangerous front 7. While the Lions defensive line gets a lot of attention the 49ers are working on 27 consecutive games without giving up a 100 yard rusher. Both teams rank among the elite teams in football against the rush the Lions Jahvid Best is looking forward to the opportunity of playing the 49ers his most hated team growing up. The 49ers may have to rely more on Kendall Hunter this week despite Frank Gore’s success the last 2 weeks. It will be key for the 49ers to get around the corner in a hurry against the Lions, the power running attack the team employs with Gore won’t be near as successful this week vs the middle of the Detroit line that features Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley.
Delaine Walker and Michael Crabtree will be huge this week for the 49ers offense. With Joshua Morgan out for the season and Braylon Edwards side lined this week the team is thin at WR and needs Crabtree to come through with a big game. Walker will see the field more due to the Morgan injury and I believe will be the most productive receiver this week. Vernon Davis may be forced to stay in and block more vs a dangerous Lions front Walker will be counted on this week more than ever.
The 49ers do not have a shut down cornerback, even if they did nobody can stop Calvin Johnson. That is why the 49ers shouldn’t try to, you don’t try and stop the best player in football. If the rest of the Detroit offense is stopped that should be enough, Johnson can’t do it all. Containing Best and tightend Brandon Pettigrew could be the difference in the game. Best came up big last week for the Lions, proving to the difference in the game.
Both teams have been great in the turnover department this season, especially the 49ers who own a league leading +10 ratio coming into week 6. Carlos Rogers has led the way for the 49ers with a league leading 3 interceptions one he took 31 yards for a touchdown was huge early vs the Bucs. And while neither team’s secondary is very celebrated the 49ers do own the better group of the two teams led by Rogers, Dashon Goldson and Donte Whitner. The team isn’t saying who will be it’s third cornerback Shawtae Spencer or rookie Chris Culliver who has played very well the last 2 weeks.
A win Sunday could potentially put the 49ers in position to have one of football’s best records at seasons end. 5 wins in 6 weeks with 5 games vs the NFC West remaining 10, 11 even 12 wins seems possible for a team nobody showed any confidence in coming into the season.
