49ers 25-Lions 19 FINAL
Wow! I mean wow what a game by the San Francisco 49ers. Vegas and everybody else had the 49ers losing this game (but not us!) , you heard it all the crowd will be too much, teams never win 3 straight road games, Megatron will be too much for the 49ers (props to our own Jared Quan for squashing that one). The first half was an ugly slugfest that was very frustrating to watch. In the end Alex Smith came up big for the 49ers with a game winning touchdown pass to Delaine Walker followed by 1 last stand by the defense to win the game.
The 49ers won the battle up front giving up just 2 sacks to the Lions famous defensive line that many thought would man handle the 49ers offensive line. The 49ers defensive front 7 needs to finally get the respect they deserve as a unit, possibly the best in the NFL right now, yes I said the best in the NFL. The group put together 5 sacks including another 2 from rookie sensation Aldon Smith, 1 for a pivotal safety in the first half. Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman both turned in excellent games once again. Willis did a nice job breaking up at least 3 passes and laying a couple big shots on Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford.

On offense the 49ers put aside about a million false start and illegal formation penalties and were finally able to settle down in the 2nd half scoring 10 unanswered points to win it in the 4th quarter. Alex Smith had a better game than his stats would say he did going just 17/32 for 125 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT and 1 fumble. First the fumble was 100% on tackle Joe Staley who let his man get by him and sack Smith in about 2.5 seconds. Still Smith stayed with it, stayed confident and made a pivotal 4th down throw to Delaine Walker to win it. Walker had dropped another TD pass early in the game that Smith placed perfectly in his hands, another would be TD didn’t happen when Ted Ginn slipped at the last second and wasn’t able to get to a perfectly thrown ball. Add in a few Frank Gore dropped passes and Smith’s numbers could and probably should have looked a lot better than it should.
The 49ers running game is really evolving under Jim Harbaugh who utilized both Gore and rookie Kendall Hunter mixing in a lot of creative blocking schemes to give the 49er backs running lanes. Harbaugh even dialed up 2 end around runs to wideout Ted Ginn who did a nice job in space. Gore looked unstoppable and my one critique in the game plan is that the team should have utilized him more.
