The 49ers running game has looked extremely flat during the first 3 weeks of the season. While the offensive hasn’t exactly done a great job of run blocking thus far in the season as they continue to devleope together as a unit some have asked the question what’s wrong with Frank Gore. I content nothing is wrong with Frank Gore, simply the OL hasn’t performed well, the playcalling has been vanialla and teams are keying on stopping Gore. But you can’t ignore the fact that Gore is 28 has had alot of rushes in his career and on some plays at least this season he hasn’t seemed to have the same burst as before.
Frank Gore had an all around bad game in the 49ers win over the Bengals today not only in rushing but in the passing game where he missed a couple passes he should have caught and some assignments in protection. As the 49ers turned the focus on getting the runner out on the edges Gore found himself on the bench in favor of rookie Kendall Hunter.
No one will tell you Kendall Hunter is close to taking Frank Gore’s job as the 49ers running back yet. Gore is still a bonified star in this league but today it seemed like the team realized that he may not be at 100% I’m not saying Gore has an injury but he may not be in 100% football shape and in his rhythm yet. Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary refused to see that another RB could serve the team well, serve Gore well and give the team another dimension in the running game. Watching Kendall Hunter hit the edge and turn it up to the end zone today was as glaring a reminder as any that the 49ers need to join the rest of the league and use a more balanced attack.
